He started with what he called a child's simple drawing of a person...
...and then separated out the parts of the drawing to get the following symbols:
Head : 
Face : 
Neck : 
Arm : 
Hand : 
Trunk area of body : 
Legs : 
You will see in another section of these lessons the following symbol for
Body : 
This one means the whole body from head to toes,
whereas the the one above (Trunk) means the part of the body between neck and waist.
